The Wisdom of the Vagus Nerve

Have you ever wondered how our brains react to different situations? How it handles fear or emotional conflicts? Now in a “golden age of brain research”, scientists are beginning to understand more about the unconscious conversations that rapidly take place between our brains and bodies. The following opinion piece from the New York Times explains the role of the Vagus Nerve and how it affects our mental state.

“The vagus nerve is one of the pathways through which the body and brain talk to each other in an unconscious conversation. Much of this conversation is about how we are relating to others. Human thinking is not primarily about individual calculation, but about social engagement and cooperation.”
